Day 37, Sunday 28 November 1999
Yumiko wasn't on site today - she has flown down to Cairo to have a meeting with the Prime Minister on behalf of the Japan-Egypt Friendship Association. I was on my own!
Fortunately on site things were rather less frantic than yesterday. We concentrated on just one feature area rather than four, and so I was able to keep up with everything that was going on. The men continued clearing downwards and westwards, slowly removing what rubble we have left on the site. I spent most of the day standing, or squatting in the trench, watching as they hacked away with their tourias. Mohsen stayed on site with me, whilst up in the hut Nick and Shin continued with the gargantuan task of logging and photographing all our finds, a task that expands every day as we continue to unearth new objects. Fortunately not much came up today - quite a lot of pottery, and one ostracon, the latter in charcoal and so faded that I at first thought it was just some natural marking in the rock. Fortunately Mohsen saw it for what it was and the piece was kept. It turns out to be a rough depiction of a dwarf.
Not much else to report. I helped Mohsen re-align some of the grid points on site which had strayed a little out of position, and made a few notes in my diary, but otherwise it was a pretty uneventful day. The men sung vigorously throughout the morning and early afternoon, lead by Abdulrahman, who stands up by the back of the tractor trailer dancing and pouting at tourists, a veritable pop star.
